Solar pumps are unique in electrical and mechanical designs. In residential areas with mass water supply needs, solar water pumps are required to work as soon as water is in demand, instead of only being used under the sunlight. Thus, an energy storage back-up power is necessary to meet demands. In consideration of weather, electricity-availability and other factors, it is best for a solar water pump to be equipped with a powerful lithium ion back-up battery.

Deep cycle batteries are a key component in an off-grid solar power backup system. Without batteries, you will not have power when your off-grid power system is not producing enough electricity, like at night or on dark days, unless you run your generator continuously. Likewise, for grid tie solar or emergency power (with or without solar), when your utility goes out so do all your appliances, unless you run a generator day and night.

Lithium batteries are a technology unlike other energy storage solutions; they can be discharged to 0% without having any damaging effects whereas discharging a lead acid battery more than 50% can cause damage. There are two types of lithium batteries currently used in whole home backup power systems: Lithium Ion (Li-Ion), and Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) also called Lithium Ferro phosphate (LFP). LiFePO4 technology is a different lithium technology that is significantly different than Li-Ion batteries. It has a longer cycle life, lower cost, lower-toxicity, longer-term stability, and is generally considered safer. Because of this, Fire Mountain Solar only sells LiFePO4 batteries.

The LiFePO4 battery 12V 100Ah is made to charge faster and last longer compared to lead-acid batteries, with no maintenance required. The LiFePO4 batteries can complete 3500 charging cycles at 100% depth of discharge, meaning that the batteries can be discharged (or used completely) until there is no more available energy with no long-term effects on battery life. As a result, Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries can last up to 10 times longer than lead-acid batteries when used for the same application.


Battery Management System (BMS)

Batteries have a built-in Battery Management System that will shut off the battery to protect the cells from unsafe operating conditions. The BMS manages and protects the cells from over or under-voltage, over-current, high temperature or external short-circuiting.
